Rock Canyon’s Language Arts Department provides a comprehensive study of language and a balance of both contemporary and classical literature. In addition to traditional course level offerings, Honors and Advanced Placement courses offer a rigorous, demanding curriculum, and students have the opportunity to extend their study of English through elective courses in Journalism, Photojournalism, Film as Literature, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Competitive Speech and Debate, and Study Skills. The Black and Gold yearbook and The Rock newspaper are both national award-winning publications, and each recently placed in the top three in 5A state competition. Margins, a newly established student literary and art publication, provides an outlet for students’ creative expressions. Furthermore, our expanding Speech and Debate team competes and excels in state and national meets. At its core, the Language Arts Department believes that appropriate and effective use of language is critical and necessary in today’s world; therefore, we provide all students a foundation in relevant, 21st century written and verbal communication, research, and reasoning skills.
