Health Services

If your student feels ill, please ask them to come to the health room located in the front office. Students are allowed to visit the health room for illness, injury, and/or health support they may need. From there we will contact you if your student needs to go home. 

Rock Canyon has a Health Assistant that is trained in Basic First Aid/CPR and receives specific training and delegation from the School Nurse. Please see DCSD Nursing Services for more information about the School Nurse Consultant role and the health room.

Colorado law requires students attending Colorado schools to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless a medical or non-medical exemption is filed. For more information about vaccine requirements, resources and exemptions, please visit CDPHE General Immunization Information. 

Immunization exemptions are required to be renewed annually. Please visit the CDPHE Exemptions to school-required vaccines for more exemption information and requirements.

• Submit the Certificate of Non-Medical Exemption WITH a signature from your healthcare provider who is a medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), advanced practice nurse or delegated physician’s assistant.

• OR submit the Certificate of Non-Medical Exemption received upon the completion of Online Immunization Education Module (follow the directions here: Technical Guidance and Troubleshooting)

When can a child return to school?

After 24 hours of medication for the following conditions:

• Strep throat
• Infected skin eruptions
• Other conditions requiring antibiotics

  • Exception: If being treated for Pertussis, student must be on antibiotics for 5 days before returning to school

The student has been free of the following conditions for at least 24 hours:

• Fever (without benefit of fever-reducing medication)
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea in the absence of other symptoms of illness

The student has been free of the following conditions for at least 48 hours:

• Vomiting and/or diarrhea when accompanied by other symptoms of illness

High school students may carry a one-day supply of prescription and/or over-the-counter medication in its original container without a “permission to carry medication” form on file: District Medication Policy & Forms

If your student will have medications in the Health Room, the District Provider Medication Authorization Form must be completed. This is required for all emergency, daily, and over-the-counter medications kept in the health room.

We DO NOT have any medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or Benadryl available for students at school.

If your student is medically diagnosed with a concussion, please notify the school attendance line and provide a copy of medical documentation to the Rock Canyon Health Assistant and School Nurse. Together they will develop a collaborative school plan with counselors and teachers regarding academic adjustments as needed. The recovery process typically takes 1 to 3 weeks.

Once your student is medically cleared, the school will need a clearance letter from the physician. If your student is a high school athlete, the student should also check in with the RCHS Athletic Trainer Taylor Quenzer  for athletic concussion management.
